Sridhar
Das is considered to be the innovative force and pioneer of sophisticated
automatic lighting. When one talks of illuminations at festivals in Calcutta
and in other major towns in West Bengal, Das' style of lighting attracts
most attention. That is Chandannagar lights.By the late '60s, Das' popularity
soared enough to enable him to began tomove out of Calcutta to Bombay, Jamshedpur
and even to Delhi. He
created a set of 10 panels of 20- feet-by- 12- feet each for the Festival
of India in Moscow. The Soviets are highly impressed by the panels and asked
to see the computer on which the complete lighting harmonics were controlled.
" They did not believe me when I showed them my mechanism made out
of a motor, a wooden cylinder and strips of copper." avers Das.Although
a display lasts for about 5 years, Das has to create new exhibits every
year for the Durga puja committees, which pay premium rates. After Durga
puja he reuses them for Kali puja, commercial parties, exhibitions and company
celebrations, wedding parties and finally in small towns in north India.
At present , he has a collection of over 300 displays. In
the year 2003, his majectic "Mayurpankhi" floated on the river
Tames in London.
